Vintage Watch Restoration in India

HMT, vintage Seiko, antique Omega, and heirloom timepieces — what can be restored, what it costs, and what to realistically expect.

Updated December 2023 · 10 min read

The short answer: Most vintage watches — HMT, Seiko, Titan, and many Swiss brands — can be restored by a trained watchmaker. The question is not usually "can it be done" but "what parts are available and what will it cost." HMT watches are among the most restorable due to their robust mechanical design and India-based parts availability.

What Vintage Watch Restoration Actually Involves

Restoration goes beyond standard servicing. A non-running vintage watch typically presents multiple challenges simultaneously: dried lubricants that have turned to varnish, corroded components, missing or broken parts, damaged dials or crystals, and movements that have been incorrectly serviced by previous owners. The watchmaker must first diagnose what's failed, source or fabricate replacement parts, then execute a full overhaul.

The most important step is a thorough inspection under magnification before quoting — honest watchmakers will not give you a restoration price without seeing the movement. At Ayra Watch, we charge ₹299 for this inspection, which includes a detailed assessment and a written restoration estimate.

Vintage Watch Restorability by Type — India Guide

HMT Watches

Restorability: Excellent
₹2,000 – ₹8,000

HMT manufactured millions of mechanical watches in Bengaluru using Citizen-licensed calibers. Parts are relatively available — mainsprings, crowns, crystals, and movement components can be sourced. HMT Janata, Pilot, Jawan, Kohinoor, and Priya are all regularly restored.

Vintage Seiko (1960s–1990s)

Restorability: Excellent
₹3,000 – ₹12,000

Seiko made exceptional calibers — the 6105, 6309, 5606, 6119 — with parts that remain available through specialist suppliers worldwide. Many vintage Seiko movements are nearly identical to current production calibers, making parts interchange possible.

Vintage Omega (1950s–1980s)

Restorability: Good
₹8,000 – ₹30,000

Omega's Caliber 30, 564, 1012, and Constellation movements are serviceable by trained watchmakers. NOS (new old stock) parts exist for many calibers, though rare complications may require custom-made components. Omega's archive provides movement documentation.

Vintage Titan (1984–2000)

Restorability: Good
₹1,500 – ₹5,000

Titan's early models used Japanese Miyota and in-house quartz movements. Parts for most models remain available. Titan's Bengaluru factory retains some historical spare parts. The iconic Edge slim models are more challenging due to their ultra-thin movement.

Antique Pocket Watches (pre-1950)

Restorability: Moderate — case by case
₹5,000 – ₹30,000

Swiss lever and cylinder escapement pocket watches can often be restored, but parts may need to be custom-made or sourced from donor movements. Success depends heavily on the caliber and condition of the movement.

Vintage Rolex (pre-1990)

Restorability: Good — specialist required
₹20,000 – ₹60,000

Vintage Rolex calibers (1560, 1570, 3035, 3135) are serviceable by trained watchmakers. Many parts remain available. However, authenticity is critical — using non-genuine parts on a valuable vintage Rolex significantly affects resale value.

The HMT Story — Why We Take Special Pride in These Watches

Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) was founded in 1953 in Bengaluru — just kilometres from Ayra Watch's workshop — with technical collaboration from Citizen of Japan. For three decades, HMT was the timekeeper of the Indian nation, producing millions of hand-wind mechanical watches for Indian families who could not afford imports.

HMT watches are not just machines. They are heirlooms — gifted by grandparents, worn through milestones, stopped the day someone passed. When these watches stop working, the owners who bring them to us are not looking for a transaction; they are looking to recover something irreplaceable. We understand that.

As a Bengaluru-based workshop, we hold the broadest stock of HMT-compatible spare parts in Karnataka. HMT Janata, Pilot, Jawan, Kohinoor, Sona, Lalit, Priya, and Vijay calibers are all serviceable here. We have restored HMT watches that had been stopped for 20 years. In almost every case, the movement came back to life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can HMT watches still be repaired in India?

Yes. HMT mechanical watches — particularly the Janata, Pilot, Jawan, and Kohinoor calibers — can be serviced and restored by trained watchmakers. Parts availability is reasonable: mainsprings, crystals, crowns, and basic movement components can still be sourced. Full movement overhauls including mainspring replacement, escapement service, and case restoration are possible. At Ayra Watch in Bengaluru — HMT's home city — we specialise in HMT restoration and hold stocks of HMT-compatible spare parts.

How much does vintage watch restoration cost in India?

Vintage watch restoration costs ₹2,000–₹8,000 for HMT and Indian vintage brands, ₹3,000–₹15,000 for vintage Japanese watches (Seiko, Citizen), and ₹8,000–₹30,000 for vintage Swiss watches (Omega, Longines). Rare complications, severely damaged movements, or watches requiring custom-made parts can cost significantly more. A full assessment after inspection is always the first step.

Is it worth restoring a sentimental vintage watch?

Almost always yes — if the watch has personal significance, the restoration cost is secondary to the outcome. We restore HMT watches gifted by grandparents, vintage Omegas from parents' weddings, and family heirloom timepieces regularly. The monetary cost is modest relative to the sentimental value recovered. We're honest about what's achievable — if a movement is beyond cost-effective repair, we'll say so.

What is the difference between watch service and watch restoration?

A service maintains a working watch — cleaning, lubricating, regulating, and replacing worn parts to keep it running well. A restoration takes a non-functioning, damaged, or neglected watch and returns it to working (or display) condition — potentially sourcing rare parts, fabricating missing components, and addressing corrosion or physical damage. Restoration is more intensive and takes longer.

Can you source parts for old HMT and vintage Indian watches?

We hold stocks of HMT-compatible mainsprings, crystals, crowns, and movement components for the most common HMT calibers. For rare models, we source from specialist watch parts suppliers in India and internationally. Some parts may need to be custom-fabricated — our watchmakers have experience with this for pivot work and minor components.
